Prosecuting counsel Jonathan Kilfeather opening the state case in the trial of 41 year-old County Monaghan man accused of manslaughter said it was alleged that Kevin McKernan assaulted Errol Dunne and that he died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

Mr McKernan of Black Island View, Castleblayney denies the unlawful killing of the 25 year-old fisherman from Clogherhead on March 9th 2010.

Mr Kilfeather told the jury of nine men and three women at Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court today (Wednesday) that evidence will establish that the assault took place on March 7th 2010 in the early hours of the morning. Mr Dunne was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where he died two days later.

The court heard that the prosecution evidence would show that Mr. Dunne went to the Harbour Bar, Clogherhead on Saturday, March 6th some time in the evening. During the early hours of the following morning he was on the road outside the bar. There was a confrontation between him and the accused, it is alleged. The trial is continuing.
