Local success at National Community Games competitions

Over 12,000 spectators flocked to Athlone at the weekend to watch the Community Games National Finals which were taking place in Athlone IT

Local participants performed particularly well in the competitions. Gary Campbell from Togher took first place in the 1500 metres U-16 Boys event while Neasa Reilly from Blackrock and Haggardstown came 4th in the 200 metre U-10 finals. Gina Akpe-Moses of St Joseph’s came first in the Girls 100 metre U-14 finals. Jonathon Commins from Ardee came first in the U-12 100 metre final. Lauren Finegan of Togher came 2nd in the U-16 javelin competition.

In the team events, Ardee came third in the U-13 mixed relay.

Mr Gerry Davenport, President, HSE Community Games speaking at the Finals said:

“The atmosphere this weekend has been superb, the fun and competitive spirit was evident throughout the campus. The sun was shining and all the participants and supporters embraced the festive occasion.”
