Lieutenant Colonel Maureen O’Brien is the new Commanding Officer of the 27th Battalion based at Aiken Barracks, Dundalk.
Col. O’Brien is the first female to hold the role of commanding officer of the Battalion that was established 1973.
The Galway native previously made history, when in 2009 she became the first female deputy commander of an Irish overseas army unit.
O’Brien acted as second-in-command of 420 troops from the Western Brigade travelling to peace enforcement duty in Chad.
At the time, she was congratulated by then Defence Minister Willie O’Dea and said that she hoped one day she would be appointed commander of an army unit.
Now she has realised her ambition with her new post in Aiken Barracks.
