There was a strong representation of North East Runners at the Rock and Roll Half Marathon that took place in Dublin earlier in the month.

Melanie Hearty who is part of the North East Runners told the Democrat that a group from Dundalk got together and organised a bus to the event.

“The group was made up of first time half marathon runners, a few relative ‘new-bee’s’, some North East Runners and of course the super experienced such as Collette O’Hagan,” said Melanie.

6,500 runners took part in the marathon and it was a great day for all involved.

There was an “incredible atmosphere” said Melanie and it was an “exceptionally well organised event”.

The race also incorporated the Woodies DIY Half –Marathon Championships.

“Local guy Gary O’Hanlon took third prize with a time of 1:07:33 running for Clonliffe Harriers”, said Melanie.

“North East Runners Dundalk Ladies Masters Team were positioned 14th out of 36 Athletics Clubs (Denise Murphy, Karen McCrystal and Melanie Hearty) and the North East Runners Dundalk Mens Masters Team were positioned 23rd out of 47 Athletics Clubs (Gerry O’Connell, Niall Halpin and Colm Hearty). All competitors received guitar shaped medals for their efforts.
