Local dance choreographer Emmanuella Salako was ecstatic last week when two of her dance crews made it to the final of the Irish Hip Hop Crew Championships 2013.
The championships took place in Dublin in Belvedere College on April 13 and 14 and four of Emmanuella’s dance crews from her dance academy Crystal Ice took part.
Dundalk dance crews Street Rockers, Sugar n’ Spice and Maniacs took part in the Junior division for 7-12 year olds while Ghetto Barbies took part in the Varsity Division for 13-17 year olds.
There was a lot at stake at the two day event as the dance crews that made it through to the finals would get the chance to go to Las Vegas later in the year to represent Ireland in the World Hip Hop International Championships.
“The Hip Hop Championships are like the dance Olympics,” said Emmanuella, who has been teaching dance classes in Ireland for over 8 years.
“Both Ghetto Barbies and Maniacs made it to the final three in their divisions meaning they will go on to compete in the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas this August.
Last year Emmanuella and her sister Anita competed in the championships with their Dublin-based crew, So Little Crew and Emmanuella is excited that her dance groups will have the same exciting opportunity.
“It is an amazing opportunity for the kids as last year over 150 countries competed in the competition including China, Australia and France.
“It also shows that Dundalk has great talent,” said Emmanuella who is from the Avenue road in Dundalk.
“Right now we are looking for all the support we can get and we will be fundraising for the girls trip.
“Anyone or any businesses that would be interested in supporting the girls can contact me by email at email@example.com and any support is appreciated and welcomed.”
Keep an eye out for some great fundraising events including fashion shows, table quizes, danceathons, primary school workshops and a Viva Las Vegas run.
