In the first of it’s kind in the country, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan, addressed up to 100 parents who have undertaken the Dundalk Incredible Years Project’s parent programme at the Parent Get Together 2013.

The Incredible Years programme is designed to prevent and treat emotional and behavioural difficulties in children aged 3 to 10 years.

This years Parent Get Together was held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel last Wednesday and was a great success and a day enjoyed by all.

John Lonergan, who is well known as the presenter of current RTE 1 television show ‘John Lonergan’s Circus’, spoke on the challenges and rewards of parenthood and answered questions from the parents taking part.

The parents also got a refresher on the key skills they got during their 14 week programme and took part in workshops.

All past graduates of the programme and the current participants were invited to the event and addressed a number of questions in workshop discussions.

One of the topics discussed was the idea of a regular parent forum in Dundalk and the group discussed how this forum would operate and what issues it would address.

The group also spoke of what had worked for them in terms of their own parenting since they took part in the programme.

Since the introduction of the Incredible Years Parent Programme to Dundalk in 2010, a total of 120 parents have completed the programme and gained their certification while a further 40 are undertaking the programme in 2013.

Parents who take part in the programme have a unique insight into the needs of children and families within their respective areas.

The group programme is designed to provide a supportive and non judgemental atmosphere were parents can share their experiences and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.
