Man picked up handbag

A 30-year-old man picked up a handbag in a nightclub which he thought belonged to someone he knew and brought it on to a party elsewhere – but the bag and its contents disappeared at the party, Dundalk Court was told.

A 30-year-old man picked up a handbag in a nightclub which he thought belonged to someone he knew and brought it on to a party elsewhere – but the bag and its contents disappeared at the party, Dundalk Court was told.

Tony Kavanagh, Marian Park, Dundalk was charged with the theft at The Office, Earl Street. A total of e1,500 compensation was due.

Solicitor Conor MacGuill said that his client had gone to some lengths to try to recover the bag, even going to England in an attempt to trace partygoers. He had no previous convictions.

Inspector Martin Beggy said that the items taken were of “serious sentimental value” to te owner and had not been recovered.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a prison sentence of six months (suspended for six months) and ordered compensation to be handed over.
