A DUNDALK man was arrested and charged on foot of a European Arrest Warrant in Saltown Dundalk in the early hours of Wednesday.
Martin Smith (40), of Saltown, Dundalk was arrested in connection with a double murder in which a man and woman were beaten with hammers and set on fire.
Smith was arrested at the same time as his brother Niall was being arrested in Blabriggan in Dublin. The brothers were charged with arson and murder relating to the deaths of Thomas O’Hare (33) and Lisa McClatchey (21), who died after a gang broke into their home in Keady, Co Armagh in 2006.
Detective Sergeant Martin O’Neill told the court that he arrested Martin Smith at Saltown, Dundalk, Co Louth at 6.40am yesterday.
He said he asked Martin Smith if he had previously resided at Kevlin Glen, Omagh, Co Tyrone, to which Mr Smith replied affirmatively.
Detective Sergeant Jim Kirwan told the court of the arrest of Niall Smith at Moylaragh Avenue, Balbriggan, Co Dublin at 6.35am yesterday morning.
He told the court that Niall Smith agreed that he had previously resided at Mourne View, Mowhan, Co Armagh.
He said that when asked if he knew anything about the double murder, Niall Smith replied: “I don’t want to say anything about that to gardai until I speak to my solicitor”.
Mr Justice John Edwards remanded Niall and Martin Smith in custody until December 20, when lawyers for both men may indicate whether the extradition to the UK will be contested.
