The future of The Longwalk Shopping Centre was once again pushed to the fore following the announcement of the closure of Carroll’s Newsagents yesterday (Monday).

The management of Carroll’s Newsagents confirmed they have closed their store in The Longwalk Shopping Centre with the loss of six jobs.

David Carroll, director of Carroll’s Newsagents, confirmed the closure to The Democrat.

All six staff members have been made redundant.

“It is with great regret we announce the closure of Carroll’s in the Longwalk,” David told the paper.

“All of the staff have been long serving, excellent and diligent.

“Unfortunately it was no longer sustainable for us to keep the store open.”

Carroll’s have been at the heart of the Longwalk since the shopping centre opened in 1994.

David said the closure of the centres anchor store, Penneys, last year was the final nail in the coffin.

“The footfall really dropped once Penneys closed. It was no longer sustainable for us to remain open.”

Carroll’s will focus on their other business, Hallmark, which operates in the Marshes Shopping Centre.
