The community of Bellurgan has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of a local man who was killed in a road accident this morning.
The accident happened at around 1.20am outside Bellurgan on the main Dundalk-Carlingford road when the man, who was walking on the road, was struck by a patrol car.
There has been widespread shock throughout the area, the town of Dundalk, and indeed the county, as he was a member of highly respected Bellurgan and Dundalk family and was much regarded in GAA circles throughout the county.
The Garda Siochána Ombudsman commission (GSOC) sent a team of investigators to the scene, which was still closed and undergoing forensic collision investigation on Tuesday morning.
GSOC are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation, to make contact, using the locall number 1890 600 800.
The incident was referred to the Garda Ombudsman for independent investigation
