For the first time in its long history Monastery NS has won the FAI county Louth five-a-side soccer competition for medium sized schools which was held at Oriel Park Dundalk. They now progress to the Leinster final in Navan in May.

For the first time in its long history Monastery NS has won the FAI county Louth five-a-side soccer competition for medium sized schools which was held at Oriel Park Dundalk. They now progress to the Leinster final in Navan in May.

Monastery NS fielded two teams. The B team came up against some excellent opponents in Kilkerley, Réalt na Mara B and Scoil Bhríde, Dunleer. Best for the B team were Tiernan Corrigan, Dean Kenny-Walsh and Liam Travers.

Monastery NS Ardee A Team faced tough opposition in their group. In the first game they beat Termonfechin NS 4-2. In the next match they beat Dulargy 4-2. Then they beat a brave Louth Village side 7-1. Then they beat Tenure NS 3-2 to reach the semi-final. The semi-final pitched Monastery against arch rivals Ballapousta NS. Monastery won a very sporting match 4-1.

The final was against Kilkerley NS. Kilkerley took the lead with a great goal. However Dónal McKenny played a captain’s role equalized with a shot into the roof of the net. Monastery took control and Tom Jackson scored two more and Jonathan Commins one. Final score 4 – 1. Medals were presented by Mick Neville on behalf of the FAI. Monastery NS A team: Gavin Kirk, Dónal McKenny, Liam Jackson, Tom Jackson, Jonathan Commins, Eddie Quan Ooi, Evan McKenna and Darragh McCoy. Managers Mr McGee and MsCusack now look forward to the Leinster finals in Navan in May.
