Coláiste Lú will provide a complete immersion education through the medium of Irish at post-primary level. It will be the first school of its kind in Co. Louth and one of only a small number of such schools in the North-East. The school will be based at Chapel Street in Dundalk.

Co. Louth VEC has said that the school is oversubscribed with applications received for places right up to 2021. CEO of the VEC, Dr. Pádraig Kirk, said, “we are still receiving applications for a place in Coláiste Lú for all years post September 2013. This high level of interest is very encouraging and augurs well for a bright and positive future for the school”. At maximum capacity the school will cater for between 200-250 students and is expected to reach these figures by 2019. “Coláiste Lú will be a small but well-resourced school with a very committed and talented teaching workforce. Gael Coláistí have high academic standards nationally and these schools consistently perform well in third-level college feeder statistics”.

The school on Chapel Street is currently undergoing refurbishment work in preparation for its first open day next month. When complete the school will have a generous mix of comfortable accommodation including a Music room, Computer room, Art room, Science room, Technical Drawing room, Technology workshop and canteen. The school also will have a plethora of general classrooms and a spacious reception area incorporating an interview/parents room. “The school will be kitted out to the highest of standards, including the installation of WiFi access throughout to allow for anytime, anywhere learning”.

According to the VEC, a head teacher will be appointed to the school shortly. Further, all students of Coláiste Lú will use iPad technology from day one as part of their teaching and learning experiences.
