The Garda Ombudsman Commission has confirmed it is investigating an incident near the border where gardaí fired a number of shots at a lorry being driven towards them.
The incident occurred on Monday of last week when members of the Special Detective Unit, backed up by local gardaí, went to a yard near Hackballscross in Co Louth.
Gardaí were seeking to arrest one man as part of their ongoing operation targeting dissident republican activities.
However, the man drove an articulated lorry and trailer at the gardaí, who responded by firing several shots at the vehicle.
The man drove the lorry several hundred metres down the road and into Northern Ireland.
He has since been detained there by the PSNI.
No one was injured in the incident however the matter was referred to the Garda Ombudsman by the Commissioner because shots were fired.
A spokesperson for GSOC confirmed they had been notified and they were examining the incident.
