Brazilian World Cup fever has well and truly hit popular local restaurant Fitzpatrick’s, who have opened up a Rio inspired summer bar.
Fitzpatrick’s have always had an adventurous spirit and the thatched beach bar is definitely in keeping with this eclectic landmark pub’s character.
Proprietor of FItzpatrick’s, Danny Fitzpatrick says it was more or less “love at first sight” when he saw the bar up close.
“A friend of mine told me that there was a bar for sale, and I told her I already had a pub and didn’t want another. She then told me that she meant there was an outside open bar that was for sale, and that I should go and see it as would suit the restaurant,” Danny told the Democrat. “The bar was in this woman’s back garden in Blackrock. Her son, an engineer had made it for her.”

However, there was a problem.
“I bought it and gave her the deposit and all and then I thought, how do we get this thing out of here?
“Because of the location of the bar it was , you couldn’t get a crane or a lorry near it. It weighs about two tonnes. But I just had to have it.
“What we ended up having to do was cut it in half to lift it over the back wall of the garden and lift it out over six houses and then transport it.
“It won’t be moving anywhere after this! It was quite a wide load so we had to take it away at 4am in the morning and get it escorted up to Fitzpatricks.”
The bar now takes pride of place at Fitzpatrick’s World Cup Garden, and will be the centrepiece of their World Cup activities.
“We have the World Cup garden complete with a replica World Cup.
“Whether the weather is good or bad we can serve drinks throughout the World Cup. It’s very dry underneath.
“We will have different drinks from the different countries that are in the World Cup. “
There will also be big screen TVs and a full array of seating so that visitors can soak up all the atmosphere as if they were in Brazil. The bar will be a permanent feature at Fitzpatrick’s and this is just the first event in which it will feature.
“It will be a fully fitted out bar and it will be just like being in a pub except outside,” says Danny, who admits it was a bit of boyhood dream to have such a bar.
“Next year is the Rugby World Cup and in between that it will be used as a cocktail bar.
“We will have BBQs too. It’s here for keeps, that’s for sure.”
Fitzpatrick’s will also be featuing a World Cup menu over the course of th tournament, where customers can experience cuisines from across the world.
