The election of chair and vice-chair to the Louth County Council led to a heated debate at the council’s annual general meeting on Friday.
Sinn Fein councillors argued that d’Hondt system would be an inclusive system for the council to operate.
The system would allow each party and non-party to share the roles of chair and vice-chair over the next five years.
Sinn Fein representatives circulated the proposal of the system to councillors the day before the meeting (Thursday).
Fianna Fail’s Peter Savage questioned the timing of Sinn Fein’s proposal.
“Why didn’t you circulate it two weeks ago,” he questioned.
“There wa s an information day last week and Sinn Fein represented didn’t raise it then.”
Cllr Declan Breathnach and Cllr Thomas Sharkey also had heated exchanges.
Cllr Breathnach said that the d’Hondt system was implemented in authorities where democracy was an issue.
Sinn Fein councillors heckled “it’s the same here.”
“You’re a clown,” said Cllr Sharkey to Cllr Breathnach.
Cllr Breathnach suggested that Sinn Fein should raise the issue in the Dail if they wanted the d’Hondt system enshrined on the council.
Cllr Imelda Munster of Sinn Fein said that councillors were “sleezy and greedy” to operate in a pact system.
“You refuse to have a inclusive council. Instead you be greedy and grab all that you can.”
Independent Frank Godfrey said that the council had got “off to the worst possible start” adding that the council need to deliver to the people.
He added: “I am not part of any pact group and I was not consulted by anybody about a pact. I’ve seen no list of any pacts.”
Fianna Fail’s Thomas Byrne added that he didn’t get involved in any pact.
Sinn Fein councillors supported Cllr Sharkey for the position of chairman. Independents Maeve Yore and Jim Tenanty abstained from voting for the position of chair.
The remainder of the council voted Cllr Tully for the position. The same situation happened when Sinn Fein proposed Cllr Edel Corrigan for vice-chair.
However, Cllr Maeve Yore voted in favour of Cllr Marianne Butler for the position.
