2014 is a big year for Dundalk with a vast range of different events that will attract not only tourists from outside the town, but also locals alike.
The main event confirmed for this year is the Giro d’Italia, which will past through the town.
“My Italian has got a lot better since I started working on this event,” said Sinead, “Although the event will just be passing through Dundalk, we will be making it a whole weekend event.”
Dundalk will act as a TV hub for the race.
“Dundalk will be hosting a festival weekend and there are plans to screen the race live on the big screen at the Market Sqaure, although this has to be confirmed.
A number of annual events will return including Vantastival, An Tain Festival and the Ulster Irish Dancing Championships will generate thousands of euros for the local economy.
“It has been over 25 years since Dundalk last hosted this event,” said Sinead. “It will be hosted in The Fairways Hotel and we a hope that we can hold a parade around the town for all the participants, similar to the parade that was held for the World Fly Fishing Championships.”
The Dundalk woman believes that the year of The Gathering has helped groups become more organised.
“The Gathering really helped groups and organisations understand what it takes to organise these events.
“People have already come in looking for information to take part in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.”
