Dundalk’s brewing tradition could find its way to Kentucky, USA.

last week, the city manager of Pikeville Kentucky visited Dundalk with a letter requesting that Dundalk twin with the American town. Mr Donovan Blackburn, city manager Pikeville Kentucky, was accompanied by Kevin Tuck, managing director of Alltech Bioscience Centre.

Alltech Ireland, the animal health and nutrition company, was founded by Dundalk man Pearse Lyons. Mr Lyons, who went to Kentucky in 1976, is president of the Kentucky-based Alltech Inc which has its European headquarters and bioscience centre at Dunboyne in Meath. His personal wealth is estimated at e1.8m.

Pikeville is now hoping to twin with Dundalk and benefit from our industrial experience, especially our experience and expertise in brewing.

Mr Lyons is one of the most successful businessmen to come from Dundalk. He left Dundalk in 1976. Before that he worked as a intern with the Harp Lager and then with Guinness.

He has wide experience of the brewing industry.

Last year, on a visit to Dublin, he said:

“How did I go from a brewing and distilling degree to running Alltech, an animal nutrition to food business? What was my journey? The answer, simply, is yeast. It is my passion. It is awakening greatness within me and those around me. Part of my journey has involved my love for brewing.”

Mr Blackburn and Mr Tuck were welcomed on their visit to Dundalk on behalf of Joan Martin CEO Louth County Council by Mr Frank Pentony, Director of Services, Louth County Council, the chairman of the council Cllr Oliver Tully, and chairman of Dundalk Municipal Authority Declan Breathnach.

The population of Pikeville is less than 7,000, but in many ways it is ahead of Dundalk. It has its own college which is currently planning to open a school of optometry (eye care), the first in Central Appalachia. Pikeville hospital has also became a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
