The AGM of the Dundalk branch of the Mandate Trade Union took place last Monday, 13 January at the ICTU Resource Centre on Clanbrassil Street.
The following were elected to serve on Local Branch Council; John Callan (Penneys) as chairperson, Dessie Finnegan(Tesco) as secretary and Mary O’Donnell (Tesco) as treasurer.
The branch discussed the recent decision of Penneys to vacate the Longwalk Shopping Centre and considered it a major blow to retail workers in town .
However the branch was confident that the 18 workers would be relocated to other Penneys outlets in the north east area.
Staff have all been offered re-location to Penneys stores in the Marshes Shopping Centre, Drogheda and Navan.
Tesco staff in attendance gave an update on the ongoing construction of the new Tesco super store and reported that building was well ahead of schedule
Dunnes workers from town once again were critical of Dunnes stores anti union activity however reported a steady flow of new members in town.
Divisional organiser Willie Hamilton thanked all who attended and urged all present to continue to organise in town, in all retail outlets especially Dunnes, Lidl and Aldi .
Six local shop stewards from Penneys, Dunnes and Tesco were elected to attend the upcoming Mandate Trade Union meeting in Killarney in April.
