Minister Fergus O’Dowd has welcomed the announcement that 10 schools in the county will benefit from the 2014 Summer Works Scheme for school improvements.

“Over 3,000 pupils in Louth will benefit from upgrade works to their schools under the €36m scheme announced by the Minister for Education and Skills,” said Minister O’Dowd.

“The successful schools will receive money to improve and upgrade existing school buildings. This first round of funding will allow schools to carry out small and medium scale building works across three categories of projects – gas, electrical and mechanical.

“Mechanical works will be carried out at: Callystown Mixed NS, St Oliver’s NS, Carlingford, Castletown Road Convent School, Dundalk, SN Mhuire, Muchgrange, SN San Nioiclas, Dundalk, SN Bhighde, Dundalk and St Vincent’s Secondary, Dundalk.

“Electrical works will be carried out in Scoil Bhide, Omeath and Our Lady’s College Greenhills, Drogheda. Gas works will be completed in SN Maolmhaodhagh B, Dundalk.

“These works will be carried out in schools over the summer months, when the pupils are on holidays, so the disruption to schooling will be kept to a minimum.

A second round of the scheme is expected to be announced in coming weeks. This round will cover other types of improvement works, with applications still being assessed.”
