A 51-year-old man stole goods worth e29.24 from the Tesco store in Long Walk, Dundalk, the local court heard.

Aidan Conlon, Bellingham Green, Castlebellingham was charged with theft from the store on February 9 last. Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly said that at the time of the offence his client’s home had been repossessed. He had been unemployed but then managed to get back his old job on a part-time basis. He said it was symptomatic of the times we live in that a man like Mr Conlon could find himself in the situation he was in. Judge Flann Brennan told defendant that he would give him a chance on this occasion and applied the Probation of Offenders Act to the case. He ordered the return of the property.

Separately, John Reid (29), Ashling Park, Cox’s Demesne was fined e400 for theft of vodka worth e16 and public disorder at Dunnes Stores.
