A local animal charity was left reeling after arsonists set fire to a horse ambulance in an apparently senseless act of vandalism on Halloween night.

Joe and Elaine Duffy, of Holly’s Horse Haven, were woken at approximately 4am on Friday morning.

The couple were faced with the sickening sight of their five horse ambulance being gutted by flames.

What makes the makes this heartless attack doubly devastating is that they had recently removed insurance on the vehicle in order to pay for their public liability insurance.

“All of our many volunteers and supporters are just devastated and horrified at the critical effect this loss is going to have on the on-going running of the charity,” says Elaine. “We are all just devastated.

“We were upgrading our public liability insurance to facilitate our disability programmes we had to cancel the insurance on our lorry short term in order to carry the extra costs leaving us totally financially and emotionally horrified at this nightmare.

“Our charity are a critical care cross border back-up service for official government bodies both sides of the border. We have been supporting Garda, PSNI, and our countries pounds and over the past few years through our national voice for the mountain ponies campaign, we have been taking in and caring for and rehabilitating countless horses, ponies and donkeys, who have been dumped on mountain regions, bog and waste grounds nationwide.

“We will however continue to be here for our nations abandoned and neglected rescues as they come first at all times.

“We wish to express our sincere gratitude to both the Carlingford Fire Service for their speedy response to our call out and their amazing professionalism at containing the raging fire in order to protect our many rescues as a spread of the fire could have been totally and absolutely catastrophic.

“Also a huge thank you to the Garda for their reassurance and professionalism at the scene.”
