As part of Love:Live Music Day this Friday, June 21, Music Generation Louth in association with Na Píobairí Uilleann are hosting ‘Try the Pipes’ at the Marshes Shopping Centre, Dundalk.
The event takes places from 2-4pm and will be presented by piper Mark Redmond and friends.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to listen to some fantastic playing and to try a set of uilleann pipes with the assistance of an experienced player. People of all ages are encouraged to have a go.
“Music Generation Louth has joined forces with Na Píobairí Uilleann to set up pipes classes locally on Wednesday evenings,” explained Gemma Murray, Coordinator for Music Generation Louth.
“Over the past year, quite a few young people have availed of the opportunity to access lessons and sign up for the instrument on loan scheme.
“Love: Live Music Day gives us the opportunity to promote what is available and generate new registrations for classes starting again in September.”
The Uilleann pipes are the uniquely Irish form of the bagpipes – a family of instruments familiar throughout Europe as well as parts of Asia and Africa.
Uilleann Pipes first appeared in the first half of the 18th century in Ireland and Britain and were developed to their modern form in Ireland over the following 50 to 60 years.
