St. Fursey’s Girls Celebrate Win

SAINT Fursey’s National School, Haggardstown celebrated last week when they won out against rivals Termonfeckin in the final of Cumann na mBunscol for the Corn Shean Mac Caba.

SAINT Fursey’s National School, Haggardstown celebrated last week when they won out against rivals Termonfeckin in the final of Cumann na mBunscol for the Corn Shean Mac Caba.

The team were successful in their initial group stage having played against Tallanstown N.S, St Olivers N.S, Blackrock and Knockbridge. They proceeded to the semi-finals where they were successful against Callystown N.S.

The Final of Cumann na mBunscol for the Corn Shean Mac Caba was played in ideal conditions at Stabannon on Saturday 17th Nov. The final took place between St Fursey’s N.S, Haggardstown and Termonfeckin N.S before a large crowd.

This was a very close encounter throughout with players on both sides showing beautiful skills. St Fursey’s opened the scoring with a well taken point by Sophie Murtagh. Three minutes later both sides were level. Both Goalkeepers showed exceptional skill which reflected in the low scoring game.

Just before half time Aislinn Connor scored leaving the 1/2 time score 1-1 to 0-1. Termoneckin started well in the 2nd half and scored a goal in the 9th minute. From the kick out St Fursey’s won possession and in a three player move, the ball was kicked into the Termonfeckin net by Sophie Murtagh. The final score 2-1 to 1-1.

The team was rewarded for all their hard work and dedication under the guidance of Bainisteoir Sandra Smith and Coach John Molloy.
