In the meantime, the HSE said they will continue to work on improving the Emergency Department and related services at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda “to continuously assess its capacity and readiness to deal.”

The HSE statement went on to say that a priority is to ensure the long-term viability of hospitals in the region by ensuring they deliver safe, effective and efficient services within budget.

Speaking to the Dundalk Democrat on the issue, Cllr Tomas Sharkey said: “We are as it stands waiting on this on this report on the matter to be completed, but we are not expecting good news.
“It is expected that it will graded at the lowest level of County Hositpal Status, and that, similarly to Monaghan General Hospital, will have cuts made to the Minor Injuries Unit opening hours.

“This is basically a stay of execution.”
