early intervention to tackle childhood obesity must be a matter of priority for this Government, according to Louth Fine Gael TD Peter Fitzpatrick.
Mr Fitzpatrick is currently preparing a report for the Oireachtas Committee on Health which will outline recommendations on how to tackle the matter.
“Childhood obesity is a ticking time bomb facing Irish society and I believe that tackling this should be a matter of priority for us as legislators in Dáil Éireann,” he said.
“As a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Health, I have proposed to examine this issue on a variety of different strands and I am preparing a report to present to the Committee with recommendations about how to tackle this problem.
“Looking at the area of sport and how we can encourage children to be more active and participate in sports both inside and outside of school is very important.”
Mr Fitzpatrick added: “Learning about how to eat a balanced diet and combine it with exercise at a young age will set our children up with a healthy lifestyle and prevent childhood obesity.
“I plan to meet with stakeholders in the food and drinks industry such as Cadburys, CocaCola, McDonalds, Safdfood and IBE to discuss with them their approach in promoting healthy and safe dietary practices for children.
“Tackling childhood obesity must be a priority and it is up to us to ensure that a stop is put to this growing trend as a matter of urgency...Tackling childhood obesity must be a priority...”
