THE fate of a local development now rests in the hands of An Bord Pleanala after an appeal was lodged in relation to the local authority’s decision to grant permission for the development of a motel at Carrickarnon.

Evolve Investments, which trades as Euro Services on Crowe Street, Dundalk was granted conditional permission by Louth County Council for the ambitious development on June 23 last.

The proposed development off the Dundalk - Newry Road at Carrickarnon would comprise of a truck stop overnight rest facility laid out in a two-storey, 30 bedroom building.

The 1,187 sq m motel would incorporate a reception/dining area, meeting room, and associated staff/customer services

It would also include a secure day/night compound for the parking of heavy goods commercial vehicles, a tyre repair centre, 16 fuel pumps (four for heavy goods vehicles), retail unit and storage areas.

The retail unit would have a shop area, delicatessan and drive through restaurant with service yard and public toilets. The new family-friendly facility would provide driver resting areas, public picnic area, secure childrens’ play areas.

When deciding an appeal, the Board will determine the application on the basis of the proper planning and sustainable development of the area and the effects, if any, the proposed development would have on the environment. A decision is expected within 18 weeks.
