FINE Gael deupty Peter Fitzpatrick has described the late Garrett FitzGerald as a towering figure in Irish politics.
“I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Garrett FitzGerald on the opening day of the new Dail,” deputy Fitzpatrick said. “He was sitting in the VIP section of the Chamber and he called me over as I was leaving. He expressed great satisfaction that we had managed to get the second seat in Louth-East Meath and we chatted for half an hour. He was a wonderful man to talk with, very unassuming and good humoured. He had all the details of the count and he knew the history of Fine Gael in Louth.
It was a great privilege to meet the man who was a towering figure in Irish politics since 1965 when he was appointed to the Senate by Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave. Garrett was admired for many of his attributes, for his transparent honesty and integrity, for his unremitting work for the people of this island and for his complete understanding of the true meaning of a republic. History will recognise him as the greatest republican of his generation. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
