Registration for the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon has opened this week and Dundalk ladies are advised to register as soon as possible. In 2012 over 1,500 runners and walker from Louth took part in the hugely popular 10k event, which takes place this year on Monday, 3rd June.
This year, Flora has teamed up with Masterchef’s Nicha Maguire to invite participants to share their favourite family recipes for inclusion in a new Flora Cookbook. Nicha and the Flora dietician, Harriette Lynch will work together to introduce small changes to recipes submitted by selected participants to make them even healthier by, for example, replacing salt with herbs, adding more vegetables and using healthier fats.
Nicha Maguire commented: “I am delighted to be teaming up with Flora on this exciting project. As a busy mum, I know how important it is to have a stock of trusted recipes that all the family can enjoy. I’m really looking forward to seeing the participants recipes and working with Harriette to make them even healthier, whilst still tasting great! The Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is a really special event and I can’t wait to join forces with the other 40,000 women on the big day, raising much-need funds for charities.”
Approximately 15 participants’ recipes will be chosen for inclusion in the Flora Cookbook. The winning entrants will be VIP guests at the pre-race reception, where samples of the winning recipes will be available. They will also each receive €250 to thank them for their recipe. Recipes can be submitted through the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon Facebook page on www.facebook.com/FloraWomensMiniMarathon, alternatively recipes can be emailed to email@example.com. The Flora Cookbook will also be available to download from the Facebook page after the event.
To kick start the Flora Cookbook campaign, Nicha has re-worked five of her own favourite family recipes to make them even healthier, by for example, using Flora instead of butter, which has 80% less saturated fat than the butter version. Nicha’s recipes include a delicious Herb Crusted Fish Pie, a scrumptious Savoury Scone and an amazingly quick but mouth-watering Almond and Raspberry Cake with a Passion Fruit Drizzle.
Sian Jenkins, Brand Manager, Flora commented: “We know that lots of women in training for the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon are juggling busy home and work lives. Tasty, nutritious recipes are an important part of every household and we’ve launched the Flora Cookbook initiative to allow these women to share their recipes and to also get expert advice on how to make their families meals even more nutritious. We’re looking forward to seeing all the participants’ recipes in the coming months and of course soaking up the amazing atmosphere on race day itself!”
The Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest all-women’s event of its kind in the world and it draws over 40,000 participants each year. Since the event began, over €163 million has been raised for Irish charities, making it the biggest single day charity event in Ireland.
