This year’s Relay for Life took place from 9am-9pm in The Marshes Shopping centre, last Sunday, October 7.
As last year there was plenty to see for the whole family, not forgetting the main reason for the event: raising funds to support the Irish Cancer Society in their work, locally at Dundalk and nationwide.
A spokesperson for Relay for Life Dundalk said of the event:
“What an amazing day, the weather was fantastic, the buzz was awesome and the crowds were there. Congratulations to the organising comittee for making it such a success and well done and thanks to all the teams who took part.
“A huge thanks also, to all who supported and helped us in any way and last but not least the public who came in great numbers and spent their well earned money for this worthy cause. Look out for pictures of the event and news of the 2013 Relay.”
Since its inception in 2008, Relay For Life has tripled in size in terms of the teams taking part, the visitors to the event and the funds raised.
Subsequently, the organising committee have faced huge challenges in finding a venue big enough to host the event this year.
However, not to be daunted, and embracing the Relay mantra Celebrate – Remember – Fight back, the solution was to change the format.
“We are hoping that the new format will offer greater visibility, more freedom and ultimately a better event.
Based on that, the intention in 2013 is to run it over 24 hours, possibly outdoors, earlier in the year when the weather may be more predictable.
We’re very grateful to Harry Traynor, Manager of the Marshes for providing space in The Marshes and have no doubt that it will lend itself to a very successful day.”
