FR Michael Cusack has been appointed the new Rector at St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church Dundalk.

Fr Cusack is originally from Carrick and was based in Dundalk for many years.

He has recently been a director of vocation with the order and has also done relief work recently in Brazil.

He has previously been rector at St Joseph’s.

Fr Cusack is expected to take over from Fr Richard Delahunty after Easter.

Fr Delahunty will initially take up a post in Brazil

“I’m a Brazilian citizen,” Fr Delahunty said this week, “so I’ll be returning to Brazil for six months.

“There are 30 Irish Redemptorists working there, in the north-east and mid-west.

A native of Kilkenny, he said he will miss Dundalk and its people.

“I’ll be sad to leave Dundalk. I’ve met some wonderful people and truly enjoyed my six years here. It’s a part of the country I didn’t previously know.”

He said the annual solemn novena in honour of St Gerard Majella at the Redemptorist is still the major event of the year and still relevant to the lives of many Dundalk people.

“It draws both young and old,” Fr Delahunty said, “and still very well attended.”

In fact, the novena attracts thousands of people each day from Dundalk, Louth and Monaghan, much of Leinster, Ulster and beyond.
