A DUNDALK IT student's promising modelling career could be over following a brutal and unprovoked attack outside a nightclub in Newry the weekend before last.

Baiba Engele, a 24-year-old Latvian native who has been living in Ireland since she was 18, was signed to model for the Columbia clothing range late last year.

She has been living in Dundalk for the past four years and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in multimedia. Baiba's modelling career was also on the rise having modelled for Ski Ireland prior to her deal with Columbia before Christmas.

However, following the vicious attack on her she has suffered woulds that could have a serious effect on her modelling career.

The unprovoked attack occurred around 2am on Saturday January 22 outside Bed's nightclub on Francis Street in Newry. It is understood that Ms Engele was attacked from behind by several women and knocked her to the ground. She was reportedly kicked in the head, stomach and legs and was severely beaten. Ms Engele was taken to Daisyhill General Hospital in Newry and was later transferred to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. PSNI said their investigation into the incident was continuing and confirmed that a 23 year-old-woman had been arrested and detained overnight with several charges pending. A police spokesperson said they were also studying available CCTV from the area. A spokesperson for Ms Engele said: "This vicious and unprovoked attack has left Baiba extremely traumatised both physically and emotionally. She is very frightened to go outdoors.

"Everything is now on hold while she tries to come to terms with what has happened to her," said her spokesperson

It was later determined that Baiba's assault may have been racially motivated. One of her attackers appeared before Newry Magistrates Court last Monday.

A second attacker is currently still at large and police are continuing with their investigations.
