ALMOST four out of five people do not believe Gerry Adams when he says he was never a member of the IRA, according to an opinion poll carried out by the News of the World at the weekend.

The Red C survey found that 78pc of 1,000 people surveyed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of last week did not believe his continued denials about his involvement with the IRA.

Only 10pc of those polled said they believed him while the remainder said they did not know.

Mr Adams has always denied his involvement with the organisation but this poll is a blow just before the election.
