LOUTH Sinn Fein TD Gerry Adams has denied rumours that his party is hoping to back Tyrone Football manager Mickey Harte as a candidate in the forthcoming presidential election.

Mr Adams said his party would not decide until the end of September whether it would put forward its own candidate or support one of the independent candidates.

However, he said no one from his party had spoken to Mickey Harte about the presidential campaign.

The news about Sinn Fein and Harte came soon after Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins confirmed that his party leader Micheál Martin spoke to Gay Byrne about running for the Áras.
