MICHAELA Harte, the daughter of Tyrone GAA football manager Mickey who was found murdered on her honeymoon in Mauritius this week less than a fortnight after her wedding day, had strong links with the Dundalk area.

Her uncle Dr Seamus Cassidy - who is the doctor of the Tyrone team - has a practice on the Ramparts Road and was one of many family members who celebrated her wedding to Down footballer John McAreavey on December 30 last.

Dr Cassidy is a well known local GP who worked for several years with the now deceased Dr Mary Grehan.

Michaela also had family in the Knockbridge area. Her father Mickey's brother Peter, who passed away last October, lived in Annagh McCanns in Knockbridge. His wife Eithne is the sister of Louth County Councillor Declan Breathnach, who just last week was nominated as one of Fianna Fil's two representatives in the upcoming General Election in this area.

Peter and Eithne also have two sons, Fergal and Peter, who attended Dundalk Grammar School and who were also at her recent wedding.

A family member told The Dundalk Democrat on Tuesday that they were finding Michaela's death "very difficult to cope with" and said it was all the more difficult because of the circumstances around it.

Michaela's death is being treated as murder after a post mortem revealed she had been strangled.
