Lady Captain Niamh holds Charity Team Event at Dundalk Ladies

The Lady Captain’s Charity Team event was played on Tuesday July 24 at Dundalk Ladies Golf Club. The chosen charity of Lady Captain Niamh Maguire was the Dundalk branch of SOSAD.

The Lady Captain’s Charity Team event was played on Tuesday July 24 at Dundalk Ladies Golf Club. The chosen charity of Lady Captain Niamh Maguire was the Dundalk branch of SOSAD.

The charity’s aim is to increase awareness of suicide in our local area. It also offers bereavement support to those effected by the suicide of a loved one. The Dundalk branch offers 24 hour emergency support and can be contacted on 042 9327311 or 083 4244182. Their message is ‘there is always hope’

This year the Lady Captain’s Charity team event was once again very generously sponsored by Dealgan House Nursing Home.

The winning team of Angela Connolly (22), Louise Hanratty (8), Francis Byrne (27) and Siobhan Downey (33) had 81pts and were from Mannan Castle.

Runners-up were Violet McGeady (34), Judy McDonough (28), Mary McDonnell (21) and Mary Dooley (24) all from Dundalk with 80pts on the back nine from 3rd placed Briege Renaghan (24), Marie McGuigan (27), Michelle Quinn (8) and Maureen Sheehan (21) also from Dundalk with 80pts.

Front nine went to Elizabeth McGuinness (16), Mags Coburn (22), Catherine Smith (21) and Ann McArdle (25) with 42pts and back nine went to Mary Connor (31), Bernie Muckian (36), Mary Loughran (36) and Rita Moriarty (29) 40pts. Nearest the pin on the 5th was Maura Hackett. The mens nine hole winner was Brendan McElarney (19) 21pts. Runner-up was Gerry Murray (12) 17pts.

Nora and Tommy Byrne attended the presentation and Nora presented the fabulous Newbridge prizes to the winners.

The Challenge Cup team were beaten in the quarter finals. They played against Dun Laoighaire in the Hermitage. The team consisted of Elaine Connolly, Mary Connor, Marian O’Brien, Violet McGeady and Joan McAdam. Team captains were Mary McDonnell and Mary Connor. Hard luck ladies.

Commiserations also to the Miele team who were narrowly beaten in the quarter final against Ballycastle. The home team was Deirdre Smith and Olive Jones and Ita Donnelly and Gret Manning. The away pairings were Michelle Quinn and Joyce Connolly and Criona O’Reilly and Theresa Connolly. Team captains were Bríd Rocks and Briege Renaghan.

Results of the Ladies Open Singles held on Wednesday July 25 – Winner: Juliette Morrison (28) (Dundalk) 39pts; Runner-up: Patricia Black (11) (Headfort) 33pts.
