The proposed new Louth GAA County Grounds at Dundalk Institute of Technology has been shelved according to County Chairman Padraig O’Connor.
At a county board meeting in Darver last night it was announced that the current proposal would not be going ahead due to an overrun in costs.
At present new plans are being drawn up to redevelop the existing county grounds in Drogheda.
The new 12,000 seater stadium at DkIT was originally proposed in 2010 and just last year it had been intimated that the new ground would be built at the Retail Park beside JJB following DkIT’s purchase of the facility.
However that plan looks dead in the water following last night’s announcement.
Plans for the redevelopment of the existing grounds in Drogheda have been in place for several years. An improved capacity of 7,000 had been previously put forward, along with the upgrading of the current dressingroom facilities and the addition of floodlights.
Other suggestions included new terracing and the inclusion of a new stand were the grass bank currently exists.
