O’Connell’s took the points from this game played in very wet conditions at the grove in Castlebellingham on a scorline of 2-9 to Cooley Kickhams’ 0-12.
The game started slowly and the sides shared the first six points with Niall Conlon getting all the home teams scores, Patrick Sheelan with two one a 45 and Sean Donnelly were the Cooley scorers after 20 minutes.
The home side got the next three points, another for Conlon and Andrew Sharkey and Cian Doyle getting on the scoreboard.
Sheelan reduced the margin to two, but just before the half time whistle a swift move by the home side saw Conlon finish to the net to leave the score at the break 1-6 to 0-4 to the Bellingham side.
The sides swapped the first four points of the second half Sheelan with both points for Cooley one a free and the other a brilliant side-line ball.
Jackie Agnew and Killian Shields replied for the home side after 40 minutes.
For the next 15 minutes the men from the peninsula piled on the pressure and got five points in a row, three more from Sheelan two of those frees his seventh and eight score of the game and the other two from Donnelly and Patrick McGrath to leave the side’s level 1-8 to 0-11 with eight minutes to go.
With both teams going for the win Cian Doyle received the ball about 20 yards out to the left of the Cooley goals and unleashed a bullet of a shot that flew into the top corner of the net and giving the county keeper no chance of getting anywhere near it, and put the home side three up with time running out.
Jason Long added another point for Cooley but Mark Stanfield sealed the victory for O’Connell’s in injury time and keep them in the top half of the table.
