THE Award-winning poet Joseph Woods will direct the Poetry Writing Workshop Weekend at the Patrick Kavanagh Centre Inniskeen on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May.

Over the course of the weekend participants will look at poetry publication beginning with simply how a poem gets published in the first place?

All aspects of poem publication in journals, magazines, competitions and ultimately through to preparing a first collection or book of poems will be looked at.

Two poems per participant will be work-shopped, with an emphasis on style and exploring why some poems can break the barrier of dull accomplishment. Participants are welcome to bring along their own examples.

Lastly, participants will consider the poetry reading and performance and delivery of their own work.

The Workshop Director, Joseph Woods is a poet and Director of Poetry Ireland. He’s published three collections of poetry, his first; Sailing to Hokkaido won the Patrick Kavanagh Award in 2000.  Ocean Letters, his third collection, was published by Dedalus Press in 2011. He has co-edited Our Shared Japan (Dedalus Press, 2007), an anthology of contemporary Irish poetry concerning Japan. He also reviews occasionally and contributes to radio.

The Patrick Kavanagh Centre is the venue for this weekend of creative activity.
