TWO local men who were among 315 people to shave off their hair as part of the Today FM Shave or Dye campaign to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) has broken a world record.

Gerry Martin from Rathmount, Blackrock; and Damien Higgins from Bay Estate, Dundalk joined hundreds of volunteers on Friday morning last in The Style Club in Dublin city centre for the world record breaking attempt.

Ten barbers managed to shave 317 heads in just one hour on the Ray D’Arcy show, breaking the previous world record of 229.

“The atmosphere in the place was electric. There was a lot of emotion in the place. There were people form all walks of life taking part and a large number of women also. A lot of people had lost someone to cancer at some stage,” said Gerry.

“I was the first person to be shaved by my barber. The biggest concern the barbers had was that the could not nick (draw blood) more than one person or else the record wouldn’t count.”

The 44-year-old civil servant, decided to shave off his hair because a couple of people he knows were diagnosed with cancer recently. Anyone who would like to sponsor Gerry can do so online by clicking on the following link: www.mycharity.ie/event/gerrys_shave

The Fairways Hotel in Dundalk is also set to host its own Shave or Dye event in association with Today FM on Saturday, March 19. Sponsored by The Fairways Hotel & The Walnut Restaurant, tickets for the event costs e5 or contact Martin on 086-8652065.
