A TEAM of students from Coláiste Rís in Dundalk have been crowned All-Ireland champions in a national Irish-language debating competition.

The winners - Emer Ni Fhionnachtaig; Sionainn Glenholmes; and Caoimhe Ni Shuibhne are pictured with Sean O’Coigligh, their teacher and team mentor.

It is the Chapel Street secondary school’s third national title in nine years in the Gael Linn organised Comórtas Díospóireachta Uí Chadhain.

The motion before the house was ‘Gur rud maith é go bhfuil deireadh ag teacht le cultúr an tí tábhairne in Éirinn – That it is a good thing that the end is coming to the culture of the public house in Ireland’.

The Coláiste Rís team proposed the motion. Opening her team’s presentation, Sionainn Glenholmes immediately set about explaining how crucial the term ‘culture’ was in trying to understand what lay behind the motion.

She explained how a culture is something that is positive, distinctive and creative and wondered how the term could be attributed to an area in Irish life that has waged such destruction on so many Irish families.
