THE sudden and tragic death of David Tiernan, Glebe House Dunleer, caused widespread shock amongst the farming, business and sports communities of mid-Louth and beyond.

Mr Tiernan was found dead at his residence on Friday last.

David was husband of Margaret and father of James and Leo.

David and Margaret are both from Dunleer and their dairy farm has been in the Tiernan family for three generations.

Their farm product, Glebe Brethern cheese, was one of the foods featured on the menu at the state banquet which President McAleese gave in honour of Queen Elizabeth when the Queen made her historic visit to this country in 2011.

Their product fully deserved to be chosen as the product was already hugely successful.

David and Margaret had already won gold medals at the British Cheese Awards and the World Cheese Awards, were they competed with cheese products from all over the world.

This had enabled them to break into the UK and continental markets.

The cheese is made using raw milk from the Tiernan’s own herd of Montbeliarde cows.

They utilised the farm’s primary product, milk, by developing a cheese product.

Montbeliarde is a French breed from the Jura region in France where cheese is produced.

They began by making a small batch of cheese and went to the Jura region in France where they studied the cheese making process and visited several farms and small co-ops where this type of cheese is made.

They then gathered as much information as possible, returned to Dunleer and renovated the old dairy building on the farm into a state-of-the art cheese making facility.

Julien Rouillard came over from France and contributed his wide experience of making cheese to the new enterprise.

They were also helped by another local and highly successful cheese maker, Peter Thomas, from Mansfieldstown, who has won numerous international awards with his magnificent Bellingham Blue cheese.

David and Margaret also got tremendous support from the Louth County Enterprise Board.

The cheese is made only in the summer because it’s a more natural product when cows are only on grass.

Mr David Tiernan is survived by Margaret, sons James and Leo, his mother Mona, sister Mary, brothers, Seamus and Pat, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

His funeral Mass took place on Monday at St Brigid’s Church Dunleer. Burial took place in Mullary Cemetery.
