School choir sing in Peace concert

editorial image

The school choir at Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire Ardee took part in the Peace Proms Concert at The Waterfront, Belfast on Sunday.

They were joined with hundreds of children from both sides of the border to sing for unity, peace, harmony and tolerance on the island of Ireland.

The Peace Proms phenomenon was conceived and developed by the directors of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI) over the past 18 years.

The main idea behind the initiative was to unite young people from different communities on both sides of the Border.
The concert was led by Ireland’s most celebrated conductor, Gearoid Grant, and featured tenor Emmanuel Lawler.

The school has worked closely with CBOI director Sharon Treacy-Dunne and recently attended a workshop at the TLT Drogheda with conductor Gearoid Grant and choreographer James Devine.

School Principal Mrs Deirdre Sweeney said the Peace Proms is a six-month choral education programme which was delivered to our
girls by their teacher Ms Angela McClean.

It involved the choir learning songs and medleys in different genres.

In addition to vocal work, dance moves and actions are learned and so the children really enjoy the preparation and build up to the big event.
The choir practises on a weekly basis under the leadership of school teacher Ms Angela McClean and has really enjoyed the lively, uplifting repertoire of
music they learned for the concert.

The school is no stranger to such impressive choral events having taken in part in the Peace Proms concert at The Helix, Dublin on many occasions and has also sang in the Hallelujah
Concerts in the RDS.

They were also given the honour of singing for former President Mary McAleese when she visited Ardee.

They regularly perform at school concerts and events and senior pupils look forward to joining the choir once they reach 4th Class.
Well done to Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire for participating in this worthwhile event.
