Not the time for Garda cutbacks

FR Michael Cusack’s powerful and moving homily at the Requiem Mass for Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe hit all the right notes.

It was particularly strong when he spoke about the need for us all to think about cuts in policing.

The cold-blooded murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe brings home, all too painfully, the dangers and difficulties members of the force are facing, especially in border areas.

Fr Cusack said: “When it comes to reflecting on the Garda presence throughout the country,” he said in his homily, “I think this is a good time for serious reflection by all in this country on the need for further policing.

“My parents are now living in a rural community in Galway that has no police service, but one guard, but that one guard brought great security.

“Since he moved two men in their eighties have had their heads bashed in, one left without hearing or taste for the rest of his life.

“I see it in the eyes of so many in that village that they go to bed at night in fear.

“Is that the way we need to treat our brothers and sisters in our care?

Ninety-five Garda stations closed across the country last week, several of them along the border. And the Government wants E60m euro in wage cuts. This is not the time for Garda cuts.
