Men’s mini marathon

A MEN’S mini marathon will be held at Dundalk Stadium Racecourse Road from 2pm to 6pm on Sunday 24 March.

This is to support Dundalk Women’s Aid.

In 2012 Women’s Aid Dundalk received 978 Helpline Calls.

There were 104 admissions to its refuge. This consisted of 84 women and 99 children.

They made 59 accompaniments to court. Eighty-four children and young people availed of the Playroom Project.

They also ran a playroom programme, pre-school programme, after school programme, life story programme, play therapy, and a one-to-one support programme.

They also provided housing-tenancy support to nine women and six children..

But in 2012 Women’s Aid Dundalk could not accommodate 225 requests for refuge.

The figure is alarming. Why has so many people to flee their homes and seek refuge from domestic violence?

And what can be done about?

The first thing that Women’s Aid Dundalk will carry out in 2013 will be an expansion of its accommodation services.

They plan to double their accommodation capacity and so avoid having to turn down requests for support.

The figures for 2012 so an increase of 56 per cent in the number of women looking for safety since 2007.

Women’s Aid Dundalk provides 24-hour crisis accommodation and support for women and children fleeing violence. They have one-to-one outreach clinics in Ardee, Dunleer, Carlingford, and Tallanstown, also on request. Women’s Aid Dundalk 24-hour helpline: 042-9333244.
