Fr Michael Cusack

FR Michael Cusack’s interview on the Marian Finucane programme on Saturday received such a huge response the switchboard could not handle the calls.

Once again he appealed for people to help the inquiries into Garda Adrian Donohoe’s death.

He also criticised cuts to garda and hospital services front-line services.

He has been accused of being too political.

Well, as he said himself in the interview: Jesus was political.

So he was. The Gospel is political and the murder of a member of An Garda Siochana is a criminal act that needs to be adressed.

“There are people out there in the community who know who did this (Adrian’s murder),” Fr Cusack said. “There are people connected with those who did it.”

He was shocked and surprised by the reaction to his homily at Detective Garda Donohoe’s funeral.

He also said the people of Dundalk have responded in an incredible way to thsi murder.

“We haven’t always had the best history or name, but by God, this time, the people put their money where their mouth was,” he said.

“They inundated the garda station with gifts, with food, with snacks, with generous comments. And it’s the same ever since.”

Fr Cusack was described by The Irish Mail on Sunday as “a brave and sincere priest”.

Most people - according to the national response - would agree with that.
