LOlLIPOP lady Patricia Reid, who for 29 years has been marshalling children safely across the road at the Moore Hall entrance to the Monastery Boys’ National School in Ardee, will be the town’s Grand Marshall in Sunday’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Ardee.
Since September 1984 Patricia, from Campbell’s Park, has watched over these young students and now she will be honoured for devotion to her duties when she leads Sunday’s parade.
The parade is one of the biggest in the region and will take place on Sunday at 3pm.
Entry is free everyone who is prepared make an effort, and that’s quite a lot of people.
Cllr Padraig McKenny, chairman of the organising committee, said they are delighted and honoured that Patricia has accepted their invitation to become this year’s Grand Marshall.
As well as colourful floats, there will be six bands and a delegation from Nettuno, the town in the Lazio region in central Italy, which is twinned with Ardee.
The Nettuno group have been coming to the town for St Patrick’s week for the past four years.
It is hoped that the link with Nettuno will create exchanges between Ardee and Nettuno schools. An Italian summer course package has been suggested for people between 18 and 21 which would give young people from Ardee the opportunity to go to Nettuno and learn Italian first-hand.
