Dunleer AC star Carl Dunne set to head Stateside

Dunleer AC junior athlete Carl Dunne is USA bound after securing an athletics scholarship to Saint Leo University Florida.

Dunleer AC junior athlete Carl Dunne is USA bound after securing an athletics scholarship to Saint Leo University Florida.

19-year-old Carl has had a tremendous career to date. He joined the club when he was 12 and has continued to improve each season winning many louth, Leinster and All-Ireland championships. Carl has also ran for Ireland on many occasions.

After attending National School in Tenure, Carl then went to St Joseph’s CBS in Drogheda. It was here that Carl was introduced to athletics by St Joseph’s CBS athletics coach Mark Stephenson.

The Dunne family have a long history with Dunleer AC. Grandparents Paddy and Mary Dunne were regular spectators at all running events and all the Dunne family ran with the club at some stage including Geraldine who was All-Ireland cross country champion in 1980.

A presentation night was held recently at Whiteriver Park Karting Track where Carl was honoured by St Josephs “The Joeys” Athletic team and Dunleer AC.

All family members and friends attended the celebration with proud parents Martin and Audrey and Carl’s brother Conor.

Some of Carls achievments to date include - 2009: U17 Leinster Track 3k Champion 9.13; U17 All Ireland Track 3k Champion 9.04; Ocean State XC 5k boys Championship Providence, Rhode Island USA, 9th place.

2010: Ras na hEireann XC Junior Men 4k Champion; World Youths Mountain Championship Italy 9th place overall, 1st team Ireland; National Schools Senior XC 5th place overall, 1st team St Josephs CBS; National U18 Track 3k 2nd place 8.52; Leinster cross country U18 and U19 Champion.

2012: Race series Fingal 10k Junior mens winner 34.01.

Dunleer AC has now two athletes on USA scholorships with Tomás Cotter presently attending Witichta State University.
