Relay for Life to be bigger

THE 2011 Relay for Life event, which raises awareness around cancer screening, is returning to Dundalk and set to outstrip last year’s event.

This year, Relay for Life Dundalk is taking place in Building C, Xerox Technology Park, Dublin Road, Dundalk on Saturday, October 8 from 6pm.

Relay for Life is an over- night community celebration which honours current and former cancer patients, their families and friends. Teams of friends, neighbours, families and colleagues come together in groups of 10+ people.

The teams are then required to have one representative circuiting the track over the course of the 24 hour event.

All funds raised through sponsorship go to the Irish Cancer Society

The first town to introduce ‘Relay for Life’ to Ireland, Dundalk, in association with the Irish Cancer society, raised an amazing €104K in 2010, and organisers are hoping to top that figure with this year’s event.

The relay will also include the Survivors Lap, which will see an inspirational start to the event where cancer survivors of all ages are invited to begin the Relay by walking the first lap of the course, cheered on by family, friends, and teams from the community.

The Candle of Hope ceremony takes place later in the evening when darkness begins to fall. Before the event everyone in the community is invited to dedicate a Candle of Hope to someone they know who has been touched by cancer.

As the evening approaches, the candles are set around the track and lit by participants.

A spokesperson for Relay for Life, Elaine Gillespie told the paper: “Early detection is one of the best weapons we have against cancer. Knowing your body, recognising changes and getting those changes checked out can be the difference between life or death.

“However, some cancers are not easy to detect, so regular screening is vital. This year’s mission statement aims to raise the awareness of the importance of screening where it is available and to highlight the need for more screening opportunities to be made available.

“ Whichever way you are going to join us on October 8th, as a visitor, or team member, we are urging you to be there to make Relay for Life Dundalk as unforgettable and successful as the previous events hosted in our home town,” concluded Elaine.
