NEW York hotelier John Fitzpatrick who is featured in RTÉ’s new series ‘The Secret Millionaire’ watched the show in Dundalk last night.
Earlier in the year, the successful businessman swapped his lavish lifestyle and went undercover on the streets of Dundalk in search of people and projects he could help.
Mr Fitzpatrick and various people from Dundalk appeared in the second episode of the show, which aired on RTÉ One on Monday, September 26 at 9.35pm.
The President and CEO of The Fitzpatrick Hotel Group returned to Dundalk on Friday last and watched The Secret Millionaire with members of the public at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
He was joined by over 120 people, including the local children he supported on the show, from 8pm onwards for the free live big screen event.
Undercover as a returned immigrant making a documentary about the recession, the show followed him as he visited some disadvantaged areas to find charities in need.
John spent eight days far removed from creature comforts and came face-to-face with the realities of social disadvantage and poverty in Ireland in a way that he never thought possible.
He said that his experiences have changed his life forever. Motivated by the memory of his parents, he set his mind to searching for charities working with children.
He found a number of excellent projects run by “incredible people” dedicated to keeping kids off the streets. He met local heroes working tirelessly in their community to help those in need in spite of rampant social problems now made worse by the economic crisis.
The millionaire proved that helping others can make a big difference in people’s lives. His own experience stands out as he put his day-to-day life behind him and engaged wholeheartedly with the charities.
A buffet was laid on at the Crowne Plaza Hotel for the reality TV show screening, which was dubbed “a night of celebration for the town” and Mr Fitzpatrick mingled with those in attendance.
The series features two other very different Irish millionaires who went undercover in disadvantaged parts of Dublin and Cork. John Concannon featured in episode one of the series.
The founder of JFC, a plastics multinational empire, spent eight days in one of the poorest areas of West Dublin, where high unemployment drug and alcohol abuse are every day facts of life.
