A LOCAL band have become YouTube sensations with their General Election themed track ‘Another Prick in the Dáil’.
2Minutes2Midnight, who are made up of Damien McKenna, Trevor Thompson, Frankie Mohan and Andrew Browne, have clocked up almost 3,500 hits for the song on YouTube since it was uploaded at the start of the month.
The track, a cover version of Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall’, was completely rewritten by the band to reflect the mood of the nation at present in the build-up to the General Election at the end of this month.
The song has gained the band wide acclaim with lead guitarist Trevor Thompson telling The Dundalk Democrat that the four piece wrote it to reflect the mood of the younger generation whose futures have been destroyed in the past few years.
He said: “All our mates have been going off to the likes of Australia and that’s where the rough idea came from.
“Basically though we’ve been gigging for about a year and we normally do all our own stuff but whenever we had an extended set we used to do the odd cover version and ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ was one of the covers.
“As a bit of a laugh Damo, the lead singer, used to sing Another Prick from Dundalk but on the day that Brian Cowen did the interview on Morning Ireland half cut he said we should do a version called Another Prick in the Dáil.
“After that I went off and wrote the rest of the words.
“We sat on it over Christmas but after that we were being bombarded from all angles to record it so we finally did.”
Trevor admitted that the band have received a fantastic response to the track since its release on YouTube.
“It’s relevant and it reflects how everyone is feeling. It’s been all over the likes of Facebook and we posted it on Boards.ie as well and it got a good reaction there as well.
“It’s going fairly well for us and anyone who has seen it has enjoyed it.
“It’s getting us a bit of notice anyway which is good for a small band from Dundalk,” he said.
2Minutes2Midnight’s song is sure to get plenty of more plays between now and the election and has become a huge hit during their live sets.
Their next gig is in Whelan’s in Dublin on Thursday March 3 with a return bus travelling to the gig from Dundalk priced at 10 euro.
